60X60 Dance
It’s true, we don’t have the most highly evolved attention span, so we avoid three hour movies and plays like the plague! Instead, we gravitate towards shorter or heavily varied evenings of entertainment. The 60X60 Project is one of our most favorite concepts in the world of the arts. The project began as an electroacoustic “tape” concert featuring 1-minute works by 60 composers in one hour. Since then, they have promoted the work of more than 1000 composers in 60X60 concerts all over the world.
The project’s director Robert Voisey and choreographer Jeramy Zimmerman are expanding the concept to include dance in the mix: 60 choreographers are presenting 60-second works in 60-second pieces by 60 composers. That sounds a lot more complicated than it is! We’re ecstatic at the idea of witnessing so many original pieces of work, dance and music, in such a little amount of time. Think of it as a night of artistic hors d’oeuvres!
Dance pieces range from ballet and tango to postmodern works, while music goes from medieval chant and neo-romantic chamber to jazz, pop and electronica.
Social currency: The ida of “channel surfing” is translated into so many everyday concepts and this is one of the most daring. Even the performing arts has to compete in an era of bite sized entertainment!
60X60 Dance takes place at the World Financial Center winter garden on November 14, at 12:30pm and 7pm. The event is free.
